Carbs are running lovely after full clean and new parts but I have had some flooding issues ,had the bike running in the shed for quite a while yesterday and float bowl levels were fine when I put the carbs on. I turned the tank tap off (which doesn't appear to leak). This morning turned the tap on and pressed the button, it did half a turn then locked up  , removed the plugs and pressed again and petrol shot out of 5&6, tested compression..fine , put plugs in and it fired up no problem, phew. I'm working on swapping floats and cutoff valves at the moment. Not sure why it filled up with the tap off but is there any way to avoid this ever happening again other than fitting a fuel pump and is it possible to tell if the pots have fuel in without taking the tank off and the plugs out.

There's only one way that fuel can get in your cylinders like that - your fuel tap must be faulty.

That's assuming you are certain you turned it off and not turned it to reserve. Even then you have a less than perfect float valve in that carb.

Good thing is you found it and emptied the cylinders without damaging anything.

Yep, will do some more work on the float valves and have just ordered a cheap inline fuel tap as I won't trust the tank one until Im certain its working properly.

That could have been much, much worse. Like bent rod worse.

I also have a leaky petcock. I put an inline shut off valve and ordered a Pingel which arrived yesterday. My next ride should empty the tank enough to be a little more convenient to put it on.

Not cheap but cheap as insurance. Plus, much more fuel flow at high RPM. It was about $170 US with the tap and adapter plate. Power Flo 6211-AH tap and A1702C adapter plate if you decide to go this route.

Thats definately on the list when the budget allows, in the meantime, I'm sick of carbs wobbling around on the bench and had some spare rubbers and bits of wood so spent half an hour knocking this elegant device up.
