Took today off work for some personal business but managed to steal a few hours in my garage to work on the bike this afternoon.
Removed the cylinder bloke a few weeks ago & today was the first chance I have had to start removing the old gasket...........what an absolute sod of a job this is !
Its been a long time since I have had to do this job but dont recall it being as difficult as this in the past. Its almost solid & is taking a large selection of chisels to lift & tease it off in very small pieces.
The "so called" gasket scraper with blade is a complete waste of time.
Not a job I hope to do again !
Pete

Hi Pete, I agree it is a bit of a faff, when I did mine I used a product called 'Loctite 7200 gasket remover' which is an aerosol gel that softens the gasket material making it easier to remove. Since using it I've been reliably informed that it's basically paint stripper, so I guess Nitromors will do the same job. Hope that helps mate.

Hi

It was Nitromors I used to get the remains of my clutch gasket off. I used a Stanley knife blade in a plastic paint stripper tool I got from B&Q. Not a fast job and it made a hell of a mess but it got it all off. I smeared lithium grease on both sides of the new gasket on the off chance I had to remove it at a later date.

Thanks for replies, I appreciate them.
I bought a product called Get Your GAS-KIT Off...........looked good until I found it was also paint stripper.
After spending weeks preparing & painting my crank cases earlier this year.......I didnt want to spoil it with this stuff :(
Looks like I may just have to apply it with a thin paint brush or something.
It is very well stuck to the casing......but MUST come off !

Hi Pete

If you get most of it off then rub the remains away with 400 grit wet & dry paper. I don't know of any other quick way of doing it

Thanks for advice.

Working my way through it a little at a time so I dont get sick, as its not a nice task !
I have a brand new genuine K base gasket to fit & its as "thick as bulls lugs" so with that & a thin smear of blue hylomar each side, it should be ok.

Not looking forward to refitting the barrels over 6 pistons again !!!
