I bought a spare set of carbs as they were going for a reasonable price. They looked very nice, in fact nicer than the ones on my bike. Having spent nearly all week stripping and cleaning them with Scotch's fantastic cleaning tool. Well actually most of the week trying to remove the pilot jets which were all stuck on burrs. It made me cringe but a bit of superglue on the screwdriver and some finessing got them out  6 new ones are on the way...
I was wondering when I might stumble on the reason they were probably for sale in the first place. On the last carb, I noticed there wasn't any laquer thinners squirting from the enrichment side.
There seems to be some piece of metal jammed in to the enrichment , er...thingy.
I'm going to try and get it out but is it even a problem if I do the modification and block them off anyway?
Thanks in advance!

Glad to hear you got the pilot-jets out !
The restrictor in the Enrichment vacuum port is approx.   .012" / .32mm.  There will be no practical way to remove the obstruction. As you suggested,  leave it !
However; It would be interesting to know what is stuck in there!  A broken drill-bit or just a piece of wire?  It boggles my mind as to what someone was thinking; when you see things like this.
Between this and the stuck pilot-jets your theory as to why the carbs were for sale is likely correct.

Thanks Scotch! Yes I was sooo pleased to get those pilot jets out. The new ones just arrived, so I double checked my screwdriver against them , just to be sure a really good fit.
I'm also very relieved you said I can leave that broken thing in there. Even with an jewellers eye glass I can't tell if it's a drill or pin or some thing else. It is unbelievable some of the things people do. Then again, I look back at my younger days and cringe at some of the things I did too. . I guess you live and learn...

I did try heating it and seeing if I could loosen it but it didn't budge.

I'll put them all back together now. Something quite therapeutic about cleaning carbs. But all that lacquer thinner blasting about, makes my face feel like I've been in the sun too long.
Thanks again!

Welcome to the "brotherhood" !   There will be many who disagree but I know what you mean.  Try not to let the therapeutic benefits turn into a O.C.D. situation or "Professional Therapy" may be required.
You're miles ahead of some with a dedicated screw-driver for the pilot-jets.  A "snug" (?)  tightening is all that's required !

Question:  Do the other two carbs  appear unmolested or do they look like they've been tampered with?  I'm just trying to figure-out what the "previous" thought process was targeted at.  Was a P.O. trying to drill out these restrictors and why?    With one buggered - did they give up ?  That's what makes me think the obstruction is drill-bit.

Thanks that's probably why I like it. It appeals to my OCD tendencies...
I'm getting better at dealing with carbs with a very delicate hand. I just try not to install things like pilot jets, right after doing my cars wheel nuts up. You kind of have to re set your parameters a little.

Thankfully the other 2 carbs didn't have any snapped off metal anywhere.  All the carbs look to have been messed with recently.  They were reasonably clean and all have a few brand new parts here and there, and the main jets had been polished/cleaned up to a shine. so someone had been there not long before me and given up.
I'd put money on the stuck pilot jets being the reason, plus of course the snapped metal thing.   There were some mashed screws on the bowls and Bracket, probably from not using JIS screwdrivers I guess..
I did ask about the history of these carbs from the PO but he didn't seem to know anything.

I love puzzles like this. Quite often when members post troubling pics, i will copy the image and open it up in a drawing program so I can blow it up 300-400% to "have a better look"

God knows that I've stared at the broken end of more drill bits than I can count and swore because I knew it would be hours before I got the F!#@$g thing out. The end view of a broken bit looks like a number "8" filled in and when I blow up this pic, i see a round piece with 2 small vee notches at 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock, and the bore that the pin is sitting in is tapered. What I think may have happened here is the previous owner was cleaning the carbs and the orifice fell out. Now what to do? That orifice looks like a brass cup with the .012" orifice drilled in the bottom. That cup was probably swaged in to the bore of the carb. I know me being me, would want to reswage it back in, so I would have found a pin driver slightly smaller than the id of the orifice and then set it in place and tapped the orifice to hopefully swage it in again. This guy probably found a piece of steel the perfect size to the id of the brass orifice and then attempted to swage the orifice in and that piece of steel (not being hardened steel) peened over on the bottom and swaged both the brass orifice and the piece of steel in the hole. In anattempt to remove the piece of steel, he probably tried to remove it with a pair of needle nose pliers and the vee shaped nicks on the steel plus the taper of the bore , would lead me to believe this.

But as Scotch says - Leave it  and don't wory about it and follow through with the enrichening port mod  he has suggested. in previous discussions
