Removing old useless tires revisited. This time the rear tire, heavier than the front, and a new technique. Much easier, safer and faster.

The sides of the tire are thinner and not as much reinforced as the rest, so I cut along the rim, close to it. Both sides, easy in 5 minutes.

Next a piece of scrap aluminum I happened to have by chance. I always keep weird things around feeling that thy are here for a reason. Sometimes the answer comes soon, sometimes it takes time. But everything finds it's place and purpose eventually.
I applied some WD40 and gradually hammered the aluminum wedge around the wheel moving the leftover 'rings' of the tire towards the center.

I left one longer piece of the tire to have something to hold while pulling the tire off the wheel. With WD40, it didn't take much power and it just slid right off.
As a bonus, it also cleaned the wheel very nicely afterwards, when wiping it with a rag. Without watching the time, I think it took probably 20 minutes..

I forgot to mention that I am really disappointed, because there was no tire balancing weight on it to add to my original collection!!!!
I think I'll have to shoot some birds from my balcony to feel batter :woohoo:

Stan, just to give you something else to consider regarding engine painting, I was reading a MOTORCYCLIST magazine from 1979 in which they gave a report on the KZ1300. I think the bike they had was a pre-production example, but for whatever reason, the cylinder head was finished in a slightly darker shade of paint than the cylinder block, and it looks good - to me anyway! I don't know if you have seen that particular issue of MOTORCYCLIST.

Nope, I haven't. But I have seen somewhere a KZ painted in a way that sounds similar. The block was grayish metallic and the head was black. Still something to consider, hence my cylinder block is still sitting untouched. I will have to give it a thought.
One more thing I heard about coating, I was told they have to etch the aluminum in acid for example. Means dipping the thing I guess. So how about all the precision surfaces? Like camshaft bearings? I'm confused .. People powder coat whole assembled engines and heat treat them. With all the seals and plastic inside. Very confusing to me.
I will have to simplify all this info and just do it with a spray can already proven to work. No VHT for me. Plastikote doesn't ask for heat treatment. And satin PJ1 used by another member didn't come off.
Maybe silver crank case, metallic grey block, and black head? Hmmm... It's a mental process, I'll get there eventually!

Could you post that photo? Doesn't have to be great quality, just for the imagination.

This is a "Test"....I know it!
Using a spray-bottle - Wash and wipe the block with lacquer-thinner -several times, then do the same with alcohol ( the poisonous type  ) , then Prime with a "Self-Etching" primer, then paint.
That deals with it !

I'll be doing that scotch! Yes, first wipe that paint off the block with a towel, then thinner, and so on... Then all that you pointed out :) I hate doing things twice! But... do I have a choice? This is one of those times I wish I had children! hahaha
