Thanks kza13, Yep I had been doing some investigations and one site listed the starter motor fitting both bikes. Being the monster the internet can be I have been doing more research to see if that was true. Thanks for the 'heads up' it seems very likely then it is the case.

It is a good price, especially for a new one. I have posted a few questions to the seller and will update you on the suitability when and if I get a reply.

I found out the hard way retrofitting the nut. Trying to do it from the right hand side of the bike (sidecar in the way) with yer legs in the air is great fun. Not!

Thanks for the info Tonto.

Yeh that's true, when I did the engine re-build I took the sidecar off, a few bolts and she was apart, yours looks and sounds a "tad" more complicated to disconnect, tell you the reason I did my starter, I found it was pulling hi amps and didn't want to start, the reason being that the starter was pulling most of the power from the battery and giving me a weak spark, pulled the starter out and cleaned all the carbon build up, put in new brushes, put it back in (all without pulling off the sidecover or gear) and soon as I hit the starter the bike fired up, so less amps to starter equals more power to coils, cheers Pete.

I;m pretty sure at some stage I will have to get a rebuild done, probably sooner rather than later. There is also an electric reverse on her as well. Lots of non-standard things to confuse my already full brain.

Yep I took out the starter without pulling off the side cover plate as well. When I install it again I will take off the plate just for my own education.

Here are the answers I got back from the Starter Motor seller on Ebay: -

Answer to the compatabilty with the Z1300 A5 compatability

Good morning,

Unfortunately I can not verify that will work in place of the other. I can however, verify that they both have the same amount of teeth on the spline(10) and both spin the same direction(CCW). The mounting appears to be the same as well.

Answer to the number of magnets within the Starter Motor

This is a direct replacement for OE equipment so that depends on how many your OEM starter had.

Not a great deal of help really.
