Run it up to operating temperature & see if water comes out below the water pump housing near the cylinder base gasket. If it does, the mechanical seal is shot. It's still available & not too difficult a job.

NICE one Phil. Good to know the water pump housing has a tell tail hole just like the automotive water pumps.
