I just installed a new stator and would like it to last a while. I've read about soldering the wires. My question is do I just need to solder the connections to the plug or do I need to eliminate the plug completely and solder the wires together.
Thanks!

Eliminate the connector. That's where the corrosion happens causing voltage drop.

Agreed, solder the wires and use shrink wrap over each joint. If properly done the new splice will outlast you.
