I've had this weird temp problem with the bike, thought it was the fan switch, swapped that out, thought it was the fan, checked that, might have been the temp sensor, checked that, turns out it was a problem with the fan relay, would only work now and again, had a spare on the parts bike so I swapped it, seems to work ok now, I suppose the only way to put a "new" one in is to get a modern relay and put a four pin plug on it ??, just wondering if anyone knew what type would be good or just any relay ??, cheers Pete.

It is just a common 4 connection relay, but the spade connectors are in a different position.

It has 4 spade contacts. The numbers & positions of spades shown on the diagram below are common to ALL 4 pin relays so you can use as a reference. You can use any relay with 4 connections & are very cheap.

All the fan switch does when it reaches the correct temp is earths & allow the fan to kick in.

The best way to check the RELAY is just to pull the spade connector off the fan switch & touch it on any good earth (frame or engine). If the fan kicks in then the relay is ok, if it dont then you have a problem.
This test can be carried out WITHOUT the ignition on, as the fan can run after the ignition is turned off.

Yeh helps heaps mate, I did earth the fan switch lead, heard the relay click, fan started, tried a few more times and sometimes it worked, other times it didn't, the old "spare" one is working every time, still even the "spare" is 34 years old, or maybe younger ?? who knows, just thought I might get a modern one just to be sure. These relays are normally open, not normally shut, is that right ??, thanks and cheers pete.

Just checked the manual, normally open i'd say

Thats correct "NORMALLY OPEN" as the fan switch actually MAKES the earth when it reaches temp, for the current to flow.
