Dear all,

After finally getting the bike back on the road and with a number of delays to contend with (please see here) www.kz1300.com/index.php/forum/bike-proj...ress-so-far?start=48
the main issue is the poor performance between 950 and 3500rpm.

To give you some idea of what's going on here is a brief explanation of what's happing.
1. Bike refuse to tick over at 950 RPM and eventually stalls if left ticking over for 1 or 2 minutes.
2. when revving the bike the RPM seems to hang around 2500 RPM for 10 to 20 seconds before returning to 950 RPM but doesn't do this all the time.
3. Bike is intermittently misfiring firing between 950 RPM and 3500 RPM and you have to give the bike a bit of extra RPM to pull away from a stationary position at a junction or traffic lights.
4. Above 3500 RPM the bike is faultless with no misfires or hesitation. I LOVE IT.

My own view on this is there is dirt or debris still in the pilot airways and the carb will be coming off the week end to carry out further investigations.

The plugs are starting to turn a nice tan colour and I've had the colour tune connected to all six cylinders and the results seem fine. However, I've noticed the mixture screws are very loose and the original 'O' rings may be worn so I've ordered new ones and will replace these ASAP.

What I'm really struggling to understand is how to set up the fast idle mechanism and the tick over. I've synced the carbs statically and also with vacuum gauges and this seems fine.

The carbs are totally standard and all diaphragms are in good condition. There is no back fires on the over run so the enrichment system seems to be working fine.

Any advice would be most welcome.

mizztheman Let us know when the o rings are installed.
Then we'll tackle some common set-up oversights and get it running the way it should. While waiting for the o-rings you're going to have to clean the fuel/air passages - again? So..... you get another opportunity to become intimate with the "Three Dragons" !
Strip 'em down ! Even with the Cleaning Tool, it can take 3-4 flushes !

Stripped carbs yesterday and oh dear, what on earth is this. Well, I have a good idea  what it is but i’ll leave you in suspense for a short while.

Carbs cleaned and reassembled. It’s 7:30am here in the UK so i’m just going into the garage to refit them as I want to get out for a ride at some point today. I’ll post details later, on how I get on.

So first guess is that it's all rusty-red oxide, from the tank typically?
But you have a fuel filter there which doesn't show a proportionate build-up of oxidy sludge, so perhaps not??!

1999 K1200LT - now sold, I like them however was nearly as big as my X5 but no faster.
